Date of Incident: 28 February 2006
Time of Incident: 0157hrs
A single vehicle traffic crash occurred in North Codorus Twp. The driver was the lone occupant of the vehicle. The driver was transported to York Hospital and died at the hospital on the morning of 02-28-06.
The person killed in the crash was Richard Cunningham, 18 years of age. He was a resident of Upperco, Md.
At approximately 01:57 hours a 1999 Ford Explorer driven by Cunningham was north bound on Jefferson Road (Rt. 516) between Plainview Rd. and Stambaugh Road (approx 1.5 miles north of the Borough of Jefferson). The driver lost control of the vehicle on the snow covered roadway. The vehicle struck a utility pole, sheering it off, and then struck a phone company junction box. The vehicle rolled onto its passenger side. While it was rolling the driver's side door came open and the Cunningham was ejected onto the roadway into the north bound lane. He was flown to York Hospital by Stat-medivac for treatment.
The investigation is not concluded at this time but it is believed that the snow on the roadway did contribute to the cause of the crash.
